The DTU Sustain Colding Award celebrates talented students and proud teaching traditions
Every year we host the DTU Sustain Colding Award, where we recognize talented students and educators for their diligent work
DTU Sustain's primary mission is to create knowledge, develop new environmentally friendly and sustainable technologies, methods, and solutions, and communicate this knowledge to society and new generations of engineers.
Our BEng, BSc, and MSc programs have proud teaching traditions, which we celebrate at the DTU Sustain Colding Award.
At this annual event, we award prestigious prizes to our students who have developed and presented the most outstanding and excellent graduation projects. The DTU Sustain's Study Board will award the prizes to the winners – BEng's, BSc’s and MSc’s.
The "Courses of the Year" award aims to serve as a motivational driver for all teachers, teaching assistants, and technicians involved in developing and conducting individual courses. The goal is to promote innovative dynamics so that courses and teaching are continuously adjusted, improved, and developed.
The next DTU Sustain Colding Award ceremony will take place on October 8, 2024.

Ludvig August Colding – we salute him with this award
The prestigious award is named after Ludvig August Colding (1815-1888), who in 1865 gave the first lecture in sanitary engineering at the College of Advanced Technology, thus laying the foundation for the department of Environmental Engineering - now called DTU Sustain.Ludvig August Colding was a student and mentee of H.C. Ørsted and after graduating in 1841, he worked as a teacher. In 1845 he was appointed as inspector of roads and bridges in Copenhagen. After a devastating cholera epidemic in Copenhagen in 1853, Colding and fellow scientist Julius Thomsen established that the epidemics spread was caused by polluted drinking water and lack of sewage disposal. As Chief Engineer of Copenhagen from 1857-1886, he improved the water supply and introduced sewage systems in the city.
Colding made major research contributions in multiple fields such as thermodynamics, magnetism, steam power, hydraulics, soil physics, hydrology, heating and ventilation, meteorology and epidemiology.
